Settlers of Catan is a great game for the family. It is alot of fun, but you have to think alot during the game. It is challenging and competitive. I would recommend it if you want a "thinking" game that is lots of fun.
Host's up to six playes (with the expansion). If you love the game "Risk" but can never find people who are willing to be desroyed by your army, this game is a great alternative. Though there are no plastic soldiers, and the object isn't to conquer the world, Settlers offers a 2-6 player party, and takes around an hour to play.Cons:It's expensive, and so are the expansions, but so are Xbox 360 games, and settlers is timeless. The setup time is around 20min, but that includes everyone placing their first settlements.Pros:The gameboard changes everytime you play, so it's always a different challenge. Great social game that let's you hang-out while you're playing. Never gets old.
Catan is an excellent game for adults and older children. It combines strategy, quick thinking, and heavy competition. It is fun and not difficult to learn.
I got this extension for my young adult son. He loves the game. With the extension, more people can play allowing the family to stay together and play together.
Loads of fun. Trading on your turn is not as critical as it is in regular Settlers, so you don't have to plead and cajole for 10 minutes. You have to learn to keep up the pace, though, otherwise every turn takes forever. Don't let people hem and haw over out-of-turn building, and encourage people to make their trades quickly. I noticed fewer 4-for-1 trade-ins and more buying of development cards. People rarely lost their cards to the robber as penalty for having too many, since there are so many opportunities for buying.Warning: One son likes this extension so much, now he doesn't want to play regular, which makes it harder to get a game together.
